Melissa Counts, MSW, LISW

I began my work in the mental health field in 2014 as a social worker supporting individuals in crisis, including survivors of sexual trauma, domestic violence, child abuse, human trafficking, and grief and loss. These early experiences shaped my appreciation for resilience and the importance of being truly seen and supported during life’s most overwhelming moments.

I later had the privilege of working in college counseling, helping young adults navigate the transition into adulthood, build healthy relationships, and manage academic and personal stress. More recently, I’ve found deep fulfillment working with first responders and helping professionals as they strive to maintain a healthy work–life balance and reconnect with themselves.

My clinical approach is shaped by EMDR training, mindfulness-based grounding strategies, and a growing understanding of Internal Family Systems. I’m also especially drawn to Polyvagal Theory, which offers insight into how the nervous system responds during times of hypervigilance or shutdown. Across all of these modalities, I emphasize the importance of self-care practices that support both physical and emotional well-being.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and exploring new places. I find joy in swimming, hiking, gardening, and grounding myself in nature. Some of my favorite moments are the simple ones—sitting outdoors with a good book and a warm cup of coffee. These practices help me stay centered, and I bring that same grounding presence into my work with clients.
